Our 2023 Call for Scores is currently closed. Check in this fall for details on our next Call for Scores!

To build working and lasting relationships with a wide variety of composers, and in line with their goals to expand the reed quintet’s repertoire, Fivemind Reeds is proud to announce their first Call for Scores! We’re looking for composers of any nationality, any age, and at any stage of their career to submit works for consideration for an upcoming recording project in January 2024.

Guidelines for Works

  • There are no requirements regarding who can submit works — composers can be any age, nationality, or identity, and can be in any stage of academic or professional development.

    • Works by historically underrepresented composers are strongly encouraged.

  • Submitted works must be complete (no excerpts from larger pieces), and must be no longer than 10 minutes in duration (ideal length is around 5-8 minutes).

  • Pieces must be for full reed quintet — no duos, trios, or quartets

    • Fivemind’s standard instrumentation (in score order) is: oboe/English horn, Bb/A clarinet, soprano/alto saxophone, bassoon, and bass clarinet (with low C).

  • Submitted pieces must not previously have been professionally recorded (recordings of premieres/live performances are OK!).

Requirements for submission:

  • A transposed score* and complete parts, including an audio recording (MIDI is accepted).

  • A short composer’s bio, plus a program note for the submitted work(s).

  • An application fee of $30

    • Composers are allowed and encouraged to submit multiple pieces for consideration; each subsequent work will incur an additional $15 application fee.

    • **Funds raised from application fees go towards compensating the musicians (i.e., Fivemind) and audio engineer involved for their time and effort. For those with financial hardships, Fivemind also offers the fee on a sliding scale. To request a reduced or waived application fee, submit a short written statement to fivemindreeds@gmail.com.

*Reed quintet score order is: Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet.
