Darren
Liou
Clarinet
A pianist since the age of five and a clarinetist since thirteen, Darren Liou has been immersed in music for nearly his entire life. By the time he graduated high school, he had already set his sights on a career that combined performance and teaching.
Based in Los Angeles, Darren recently earned his Master's degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of California, Los Angeles, studying under Joshua Ranz. He completed his Bachelor of Music at UCLA in 2021, where he studied primarily with Boris Allakhverdyan, as well Steve Barta and the late Gary Gray. A strong advocate for education, Darren also pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education at UCLA, driven by his passion to inspire others through teaching. During his time at UCLA, he had the opportunity to perform with the UCLA Symphony, Wind Ensemble, and Philharmonia, and debuted several works for solo clarinet and chamber ensembles.
Darren has had the privilege of performing with prominent ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Pacific Symphony. He also held a fellowship with the California Young Artists Symphony, performing as a bass clarinetist. As both a performer and educator, Darren is dedicated to spreading music not only through concerts but also in private lessons. He has been teaching clarinet and bass clarinet for over three years, and with more than fifteen years of piano experience, he also teaches piano to young musicians.
Outside of music, Darren enjoys creating YouTube videos, playing drums, and honing his archery skills.
